Direct Mail Piece

Hand-done lettering to emphasize a feeling

In order to really convey the idea of dirty water and pollution I wanted to create an eroded type face that had that same feeling. After experimenting with splattering, splashing, dripping, scraping, and scratching I finally found the method that gave me the desired look I was searching for. I globbed paint on a piece of acetate straight from the tube. I did so in the general shape of the letters I desired. After creating the word I then placed another piece of acetate on top and pressed the two together. This created a sort of Rorschach effect. It reminded me of what happens when you drop ink into clear water, and that said pollution to me. I then incorporated the graphic I created into a direct mail piece encouraging community clean-ups.
